Sheila Guymer - Pianist
Pianist Sheila Guymer's CD, Bitter Music by Harry Partch with Warren Burt (reader), was recorded by ABC Radio, and released by the American Composers’ Forum in 1995. It was reviewed by Schwann Opus as "a must", and by the San Francisco Examiner as "a considerable labor of love... one of the most important releases of the year." Her recitals have also been broadcast by ABC-FM, 3MBS-FM, and 4MBS-FM. During 1998-2004, Sheila was a Staff Accompanist at Melbourne University, and for master classes at the National Academy of Music. She was also appointed Lecturer at the Melba Conservatorium; and Tutor at Melbourne University. Last year she was invited by Charles Castleman (Chair of Strings, Eastman School of Music) to be a staff pianist for his Quartet Program (USA), a seven-week international summer school for elite young string players. Now based in Sydney, Sheila is in demand as a freelance accompanist. She is Assistant Director for the Australian String Academy’s Piano Summer School. She has performed in recital with string players Charles Castleman, Peter Rejto, Susan Blake, Josephine Vains, Maria Lindsay, and Josephine Costantino; and with singers John Lander, Christine Wilson and Shu-Cheen Yu, plus colleagues from the MSO, SSO and Orchestra Victoria. Sheila holds both First Class Bachelor and Master degrees in Solo Piano. She has won a number of awards and prizes, including a prestigious Australian Postgraduate Award. Currently she is undertaking a Masters in Ensemble Piano at Sydney Conservatorium, studying with David Miller. Her previous teachers include Ian Holtham, Stephen McIntyre, Michael Kieran-Harvey and Kyoko Hashimoto. In August she will be touring NSW and Victoria with US violinist Jocelyn Adelman (more information about her tour is available at www.sheilaguymer.com).
